Renting an apartment or villa is the best way to experience the real Morocco. Most Moroccans usually rent an apartment on vacation rather than stay at a hotel. Many people can rent through the internet, but keep in mind anywhere through the internet from sites such as homlidays.co.uk , homeaway.com or airbnb.com one will be charged a price of a European not a Moroccan. This is usually at least 1000-1700 dirham ($120-$220 a night if you are lucky) through the online sites for a mid sized 2 bedroom apartment depending on the location. I personally booked an apartment (not in Tangier) through homeaway had to relocate the apartment. The location was in an area where one must be inside after dark if they are not Moroccan. Always book towards the city center rather than the Medina, if one plans on stepping foot outside at night.
The best way to rent an apartment is through a property manager in Morocco. A lot of Moroccans make a living as property managers.
To keep it simple we suggest:
1.Book a hotel for the arrival night as passport control requires an address and phone number when arriving in Morocco. One will have trouble entering if they do not have an address where they are staying at in Morocco.
2. If you don’t want to waste time looking at apartments, I personally recommend Appart Hotel Le Rio. I’ve stayed here before and it has all the modern comforts of Europe. It’s located right on the beachfront, super clean, and brand new. If you book ahead of time, usually you can book a 1 bedroom apartment for $60 a night. It will be much larger than any hotel room you find in Europe and includes a kitchen. The wifi worked perfect and I was able to video skype the USA with no problems. A nice bonus is they offer a high quality free breakfast at the cafe below every morning and daily cleaning. This is the best choice if one stays in Tangier less than a week.
3. Keep in mind Tangier has many residences for rent. Far more than most cities. One can always find an apartment in Tangier. Expect to pay at 600-900 mad for a nice 2 bedroom in the city center. Villas around Tangier rent for 1500+mad depending on the season. A lot of these properties now a days are managed through airbnb or vrbo (homeaway). Booking through these sites is safer as they take most forms of payments. NEVER PAY THROUGH WESTERN UNION.
